The IEEE established the Robert N. Noyce Medal for exceptional contributions to the microelectronics industry. It is given to individuals who have demonstrated contributions in multiple areas including technology development, business development, industry leadership, development of technology policy, and standards development.
This medal is named in honor of Robert N. Noyce, founder of Intel Corporation. He was also renowned for his 1959 invention of the integrated circuit.
In the evaluation process, the following criteria are considered: field leadership, contribution, originality, breadth, inventive value, publications, other achievements, society activities, honors, duration, and overall strength of the nomination.
Recipient selection is administered by the IEEE Medals Council of the IEEE Awards Board. It is awarded to an individual or team of up to three.
Funded by the Intel Foundation, the award was presented for the first time in 2000.
The award consists of a gold medal, bronze replica, certificate and honorarium.
