IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) Accreditation Overview

IEEE Educational Activities is responsible for carrying out the accreditation process with the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET) for U. S. engineering and engineering technology programs. EAB also participates in international accreditation activities.

ABET

ABET is a federation of 28 engineering, professional and technical societies and is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to accredit programs in engineering, engineering technology, computing science, and applied science programs within the United States. Within ABET, there are four accreditation commissions:

  • The Applied Science Accreditation Commission (ASAC) of ABET accredits applied science programs
  • The Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET accredits engineering programs
  • The Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC) of ABET accredits engineering technology programs
  • The Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of ABET accredits computing programs

The IEEE Role in Accreditation

The IEEE is ABET's largest society, responsible for the accreditation of approximately 709 engineering and engineering technology programs through ABET. IEEE EAB facilitates all accreditation activities.

The IEEE EAB Accreditation Policy Council (APC) develops IEEE policies, procedures and positions with regard to accreditation of engineering and engineering technology. The APC also coordinates the activities of

The CEAA is responsible for IEEE's participation in the accreditation activities of the EAC of ABET. The CTAA handles the IEEE's participation in the accreditation activities of the TAC of ABET. The CEAA and CTAA carry out the selection, education, and assignment processes of qualified program evaluators for the IEEE Educational Activities Board. The key objective of CGAA is to identify and meet the accreditation needs of the profession by assisting in the establishment and quality of accreditation in applied science, computing, engineering and technology outside of the United States.

Service as an IEEE program evaluator, engineering or engineering technology, gives members of the profession an opportunity to contribute to the achievement of high quality educational standards of engineering programs. These committees conduct training workshops for

  • program evaluators;
  • department chairs;
  • deans;
  • and others interested in accreditation.

The IEEE EAB administrates the procedures for selecting IEEE Representative Directors on the ABET Board of Directors.
