Introduction to the new Technical Interest Profile Codes (TIPS)

Effective October 2004, the IEEE Technical Interest Profile (TIP) codes have been restructured making them simpler to manage and maintain, and at the same time, a much more useful source of our member's technical interests.

The new TIP structure includes a migration to a multi-level hierarchical system, allowing members to choose high level broad based technical codes (codes beginning with "2" which correlate to the broad technical interest area of an Organizational Unit) or to choose ("drill down") specific technical codes at a subsequent level (codes beginning with numbers "3, 4 and 5") that are specific to that technical interest area.

The new profile setup allows for a shared list of "core" codes (in most cases these codes begin with "3") spanning multiple technical areas and shared by multiple IEEE organizational units. These shared codes allow those entities the capability to select members which have a common cross-technical interest. Codes beginning with a number "4" designation are unique technical codes (not shared), identified by specific organizational units.

For this new initiative, current TIP codes for members have been mapped (migrated) to new corresponding codes as identified by the individual S/Cs during the process. However, some old codes were not given a new corresponding mapping code for the migration effort. These codes were consequently all assigned a code beginning with a "5" number designation and titled "Other - XXX", where XXX is the title of the corresponding Organizational Unit/Area and the numerical assignment correlates to the Organizational Unit's numerical designation.

Another enhanced feature with this launch provides members with the capability to manage their own TIP code profiles through IEEE's web based Change of Profile site throughout the year at http://www.ieee.org/coa/.
